This blog is about my journey through Canada and China to complete research for my book about Lucy Ker (1868-1969).I want to experience the vast distances, the scenery, the horizons, the people, the atmosphere. I'm going under the comforting umbrella of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust; she travelled as the wife of a British Consular Official. I'll write about their lives as I go and take lots of photos.

About Me
I was fascinated by my grandmother when I was little. I was in awe of her too, as she was one of those indomitable Victorian women; stubborn, clever, and as she described herself in her memoirs, "plain and obstreporous". She told stories, which I caught bits of in passing, about growing up in Canada, marrying my grandfather and moving to China where they lived for 30 years. When I was 12 I went to see the Hollywood epic '55 Days In Peking' with my father (her son). He roared with laughter all the way through and I was mortified. I believed (for reasons I'll explain later) that he didn't believe her version of events, and as she had given advice to the film-makers, then what I saw on the screen must be the truth. I was outraged and promised myself that one day I would tell her story. 40-hrmph- something years later, I am. The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has awarded me a Travelling Fellowship which gives me this wonderful opportunity to off and see as much as I can of where she lived.
